Retrieving RatingsWeimaraners have inherent retrieving abilities as part of their versatile hunting traits that includes both upland game in the field such as quail, and waterfowl in the water, such as duck. The WAC has instituted Retrieving Ratings to test Weimaraners against 3 progressive standards of ability and performance. Novice Retrieving Dog (NRD). Single retrieves on both land/water for Weimaraners with natural ability and some training and exposure to the test elements. Retrieving Dog. (RD), Double Retrieves on land/water for intermediate levels of training, steadiness and endurance. Retrieving Dog Excellent (RDX). Triples on land/water plus a blind water retrieve for the finished Weimaraner with the utmost of steadiness, training plus endurance. Please visit our photo gallery link to see some of our Weimaraners in action during an actual Ratings Test and review the Ratings Regulations link to learn about the ability and standard of performance we strive for with our Weimaraners.

Spirit hunts very well with Smudge, the German Wirehaired Pointer. They compliment each other. As Smudge is more of a ditch dog, likes to go into the think stuff, muck and mud, Spirit likes to hunt the fringes and the open grasslines.
Spirit is a very gentle retriever and she is very proud when bringing back a game bird. Spirit is very quiet in the field and seems to be able to get near the birds without them hearing her.

On one of our last hunts last season, Spirit was hunting in really thick woods and we got separated for a couple of minutes. When we met up, she was missing her orange cape. I said, "Where 's your vest, Fetch?" Spirit ran into the bushes and came back with the vest in her mouth, just as proud as if she was bringing back a bird. |
Her usual food on a hunt is one peanut butter and jam sandwich, a hard boiled egg and a piece of beef jerky. |
